How BIG is Samsung? (They Have a Military Department!)
So what is Samsung, that it can spread over so many different industries? That is, what is the common unifying element?
Well, besides the historical, legal and economic development of a corporation, I think it is a philosophy and culture. The idea of Samsung embodied in the name is what unifies all these different people.
So, how would I apply that? As an artist involved in multiple mediums, what unifies everything? Well, my name and my ideas. Some of those ideas need to be able to transcend the different mediums, so it has to be a grand vision.
Perhaps then at some point, I could hire people and turn into a proper business and they would all be unified under that vision. But the vision would have to be something larger than their own visions and ideals, because otherwise they would not follow and would not be inspired.
That's also part of Samsung, the audacity and grandness of it's vision. A vision that is too big for any one person, which them becomes a unifying vision for many people.
There's also a similar aesthetic that goes along with the vision, in the case of Samsung: clean, modern, cool, use of blue, white, metallic and black.
Perhaps more importantly though, the vision needs to inspire consumers, your customers, your non-employee followers. Employees after all, are being paid to follow, but customers actually pay you to be your follower.
So how might you apply these insights anyone?
Well, it depends on the scope of your ambition. Your vision should suit the scope of your ambition. And perhaps you should always goes one level beyond your ambition in terms of scope. That is, you reach further and grow into that ambition. The only caveat is that, having an artificially inflated ambition might be inauthentic and you might not put your heart into it.... So this is up for debate.
Your ambition should also be in line with your field. Samsung was founded by a businessman / industrialist. A musician would probably want to focus on their field. A chef in their field, etc...
So what was Samsung's vision? Improve the economy of Korea through business. Improve Korea through technological innovation... perhaps, as a global company, improve the world through technological innovation.
What was Stan Lee / Marvel's vision? Fantastic stories of heroism that people could relate to.
What was DC comics vision? Otherworldly stories of heroism.
What is my grand vision? What is yours?
