Daniel Day-Lewis

John Hartoch, Day-Lewis' acting teacher at Bristol Old Vic theatre school, said of his former pupil's achievement, Although we have quite an impressive alumni – everyone from Jeremy Irons to Patrick Stewart – I suppose he is now probably the best known, and we're very proud of all he's achieved. I certainly hold him up to current students of an example, particularly as an example of how to manage your career with great integrity. He's never courted fame, and as a result, he's never had his private life impeached upon by the press. He's clearly not interested in celebrity as such – he's just interested in his acting. He is still a great craftsman. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Day-Lewis

Ah, finally got to see this. A pretty cool movie and amazing world building!

Writing should just be called idea capturing

As I'm working on developing stories for new comics, I'm learning how to "write." It's such an inaccurate word for what writing really entails. Or perhaps my perception of the word was heretofore limited. "Writing" to me means typing, or writing with a pen. Putting down words. Definition of write transitive verb 1a: to form (characters, symbols, etc.) on a surface with an instrument (such as a pen) https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/write But writing in the context of writing a story or writing a comic or screenplay is so much more. Really, it's about creating ideas, characters, stories, worlds. Writing is creating and shaping a piece of art. It is crystallizing thoughts.

works and reworks

https://nyti.ms/2LH7Xd6 here's an article about this whole thing sorta related to my last post. “At some point, we must remind ourselves, any changes we make to a creation no longer make it better but just different (and sometimes worse),” Dr. Alex Lickerman wrote in Psychology Today on the topic of just getting things done. “Recognizing that inflection point — the point at which our continuing to rework our work reaches a law of diminishing returns — is one of the hardest skills to learn, but also one of the most necessary.” Voltaire: “Perfect is the enemy of good.” But here’s the key: Somewhat paradoxically, research has shown  that satisficers are more satisfied with their decisions than maximizers are. and my response (via twitter) Donny ‏   @donnydrawz   now More Replying to  @TimHerrera I like to make different versions, which is the best of both worlds: getting it done and getting to rework it endlessly. For example, I may finish a...

The pressure of polish

Image
The drawings I like of mine the most are loose and messy. They have a lot of extra lines, but they capture gesture and emotion. When I try to create finished artwork, a lot of that life I can't seem to call forth. I believe it's because of the pressure to create something "professional" and polished. It's a false expectation, because that's not how I draw and it's not even what I really like anyways. This applies generally to me as an artist too. I expect myself to be better than I am, so with a lot of my work I'm like "I can do better than this." Maybe I will be able to do "better" some day, but I really am as good as what I can produce. I guess I need to accept myself as an artist, like accepting myself as a person. Just be myself. Though, that doesn't mean I won't push myself or learn or study or try new things or incorporate new influences... But I shouldn't get hung up on making it "professional" loo...

Imposter Syndrome and related cognitive biases

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impostor_syndrome a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud". https://www.themuse.com/advice/5-different-types-of-imposter-syndrome-and-5-ways-to-battle-each-one Young says people with this competence type believe they need to be a natural “genius.” As such, they judge their competence based ease and speed as opposed to their efforts. In other words, if they take a long time to master something, they feel shame. https://www.comicsbeat.com/impostor-syndrome/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect In 2014, Dunning and Helzer described how the Dunning–Kruger effect "suggests that poor performers are not in a position to recognize the shortcomings in their performance". ...Moreover, competent students tended to underestimate their own competence, because they erroneously presumed that tasks easy for them...
